SIG Membership Application

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) is a national organization of more than 33,000 registered nurses and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching, research and education in the field of oncology. A prime goal of ONS is to provide a network of peer support and exchange for oncology nurses. To do so, ONS introduced a formal structure of Special Interest Groups (SIG) to facilitate networking of ONS members in an identified subspecialty area. The Surgical Oncology SIG was established in 1991.

Surgical Oncology SIG Mission Statement

The mission of the Surgical Oncology SIG is to promote excellence in surgical oncology nursing by supporting the ONS mission statement, and by:

  • Developing a knowledge base that promotes excellence in surgical oncology nursing within oncology nursing practice;
  • Increasing resources in order to ensure the continued growth, development and strength of the Surgical Oncology SIG.

Goals

  • Promote continuing education through the submission of topics for presentation at the ONS Congress and Institutes of Learning.
  • Communicate effectively with SIG members through newsletters and communiques.
  • Promote collaboration with other SIGs.
  • Develop a leadership team within the Surgical Oncology SIG.
  • Recruit and retain SIG members.

Activities

The Surgical Oncology SIG has chosen to fulfill their goals through activities such as conducting an educational needs assessment of SIG members, and submitting topics for presentation at ONS educational events to meet those needs. The SIG is planning to collaborate on projects and share newsletter articles with other SIGs related to surgical oncology. They are also in the process of surveying SIG members to determine areas of expertise and willingness to serve as resources for the group.

Benefits/Communication

The SIG meets once per year during the ONS Annual Congress. Surgical Oncology SIG leaders communicate regularly with SIG members through written communiques, and through a newsletter. The newsletter features timely articles on subjects related to surgical oncology nursing, practice tips, educational announcements, and reports on SIG projects and activities.

Membership Requirements

All SIG members must be members in good standing of the national Oncology Nursing Society. ONS members receive one free SIG membership. Additional SIG memberships are $15 each.
